Police say a Mastic Beach man beat and stabbed his girlfriend with a screwdriver before injuring her with her own car.
The incident happened Monday in the woman's Point Lookout home. It's unclear how the initial argument began, but police say it quickly turned violent.
Nassau Police Lt. Rich LeBrun says Brant Ovsianik, 35, repeatedly slapped the woman and slammed her face into the floor, breaking her nose and requiring her to get stitches.
Police say Ovsianik then stabbed the woman in the side with a screwdriver. When she tried to call police, investigators say Ovsianik began choking her and then broke her phone.
They say Ovsianik then tried to flee in the victim's vehicle. While backing up, they say the woman walked behind it as Ovsianik pressed on the gas. She suffered injuries to both knees.
Police say the woman called 911 from another phone and reported the assault. While they were responding to the call, LeBrun says officers noticed a person driving erratically and pulled him over. He says it turned out to be Ovsianik.
LeBrun says Ovsianik got out of the car and punched one of the officers in the face.
The suspect pleaded not guilty to charges that include assault, resisting arrest, obstruction of breathing, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and more.
Ovsianik was arraigned Tuesday at Nassau University Medical Center, where he was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
