Police: Man in custody for shooting that killed 12-year-old Dejah Joyner
A Hempstead man has been arrested in connection with the October shooting that killed a 12-year-old girl as she ate dinner at home.
As News 12 has reported, 12-year-old Dejah Joyner died after she was struck in the head by a stray bullet that came through a window of her Dartmouth Street home.
Nassau police say they arrested 20-year-old Jakwan Keller, of Hempstead, for the shooting. Police located him driving a 2013 BMW at the corner of Laurel and Linden avenues Sunday morning and they say he was taken into custody without incident.
Keller is being charged with second-degree murder, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.
Details on the investigation that led police to Keller have not yet been released.
As News 12 has reported, Hempstead Village and Nassau County Crime Stoppers had offered a $75,000 reward for information in the case. Joyner's death sparked outrage and anti-violence rallies in the Hempstead community.
Dartmouth Street was renamed Dejah Joyner Street to honor the girl. At the time, Mayor Wayne Hall said he hoped the sign would continuously remind people to speak up with any information that could help police catch her killer.
Keller is expected to be arraigned on second degree murder charges today.
