Police: Man broke into businesses, crashed stolen car
Police say a Centerport man is facing multiple charges for a crime spree in East Rockaway Saturday morning that included multiple break-ins and a car theft that ended with a crash.
Investigators say 31-year-old Adam Tweedie, of Fort Salonga Road, used a cement block to break a glass door of Chuck's Auto in East Rockaway shortly before 7 a.m. They say Tweedie entered the business but left without any proceeds.
Moments later, he slipped into an opening in a fence at Pinnacle Contracting on Franklin Avenue, but again left without any proceeds, police say.
Shortly after 7 a.m., Tweedie allegedly stole a 2014 Nissan Altima that had been left running on Franklin Avenue while its owner was in a bagel shop ordering breakfast.
Police say Tweedie crashed the stolen car into a utility pole, and then slammed into another car that was heading northbound on Ocean Avenue. Tweedie then fled the crash scene on foot, police say. No injuries were reported in the crash.
Tweedie next entered the Minute Man Dry Cleaners on Ocean Avenue around 8 a.m. and took cash from the register before fleeing the scene on foot, according to police.
Officers say they caught up with Tweedie a short time later on Main Street in East Rockaway and placed him under arrest. They say they he was found with the keys to the stolen Nissan and the cash that was taken from the dry cleaners.
Tweedie is facing a slew of charges, including two counts of third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree criminal trespass and leaving the scene of an accident.
