Police are working to determine if the suspect and pregnant victim in a stabbing outside a Fairfield restaurant knew each other.
The incident occurred outside Paci Restaurant at the Southport train station Sunday night.
Police responded to calls that the employee was attacked from behind while taking garbage to a dumpster.
"She was hit in the face a few times and then when she made an attempt to get away, she was stabbed in the abdomen with an unknown object," says Fairfield Police Capt. Robert Kalamaras.
The owner of Paci's told News 12 the victim works in the kitchen and is seven months pregnant. Police say the woman went to the hospital where she and her baby are doing OK.
Detectives say they haven't found a weapon. They are now looking at surveillance video to try and determine the connection, if any, between the victim and the suspect.
"There was a party going on in the restaurant and there are other leads we're looking into, and seeing if any people from the party were involved in this violence," says Kalamaras.
Authorities do not believe there is a reason for the community to be concerned following the stabbing. Nonetheless, police have increased patrols in the area.
Anyone who may have information in the case is asked to call Fairfield police at (203) 254-4800.
