Police have identified a Stratford woman who was hit and killed by a car while walking to the train station.
The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Nancy Flores, according to police.
Police say Flores left Target Wednesday night after her shift there and was walking to the train station to head home for the night. A 23-year-old woman struck Flores with her car at the intersection of Tresser and Washington Boulevard around 9:15 p.m.
The driver stayed on scene and is cooperating, police say.
Investigators are looking through surveillance video and reviewing witness statements to piece together what happened.
This is the first pedestrian fatality this year in Stamford. The city has struggled with high numbers of pedestrian and cyclist accidents in the past. Officials have made efforts to decrease those numbers, including enforcement, public education, and a citywide retiming of traffic lights.
"We've been working really hard on both increasing pedestrian safety as well as driver safety, and cyclist safety in the city," said Jim Travers, Stamford Transportaion and Parking Bureau Chief.
Despite the latest incident, Travers believes the retiming of the city's 209 traffic signals will have a significant impact in reducing car crashes and pedestrian incidents.
"Just pay attention to what's going on," he said. "Pay attention to your surroundings, obey all your traffic signals, and stay off your phones."
There were two fatal pedestrian crashes last year and two in 2017.
