A 26-year-old Stamford woman faces drunken driving charges after allegedly driving the wrong way down Interstate 95 and smashing into a state police cruiser.
The trooper had been dispatched after reports of a fast-moving 2016 Audi heading in the wrong direction near Exit 6 just after midnight Monday morning.
Department of Transportation cameras along the highway helped police track it down. But when a trooper approached the vehicle near Exit 12 in Darien, it sideswiped his patrol car. Police dashcam video shows the impact.
"The trooper did everything that he could to try to stop this vehicle from going any further, because obviously it's a huge danger to have that vehicle going the wrong way on the highway," says Sgt. Robert Derry, of the Connecticut State Police.
Police say charges against the driver, Ashton Steen, include driving under the influence. They say she admitted she was drinking and thought she was in New Jersey.
She was released on bond and will face arraignment next month.
Neither Steen nor the state trooper were hurt, but both cars sustained serious damage.
Derry says wrong-way driving is frequently reported to state police, especially on the Merritt Parkway. But in most cases, he says, drivers correct themselves before police arrive.
AP wire services helped contribute to this report.
