More than a dozen headstones at a Wall Township cemetery were damaged or destroyed by an out-of-control driver.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Catharine's Cemetery on West Chicago Boulevard.

Police say a driver was heading on Village Road toward West Chicago when he suffered a medical emergency. The vehicle then entered the cemetery, striking the sign and then running into an older section of headstones, according to one of the caretakers.

“There’s no vandalism. There’s no ill intent. It’s unfortunate for a resident in town that had a medical episode and left the roadway, striking the gravestones,” said Wall Township Police Chief Sean O’Halloran.

A representative of the St. Catharine – St. Margarite Parish tells News 12 that family members affected by the damage are being contacted.

The driver is facing several motor vehicle summonses from the crash.
