Customers helped police arrest an alleged shoplifter at a Westbury 7-Eleven overnight following an act of violence in the store.
Nassau police say William Mohan, 53, of Lindenhurst, was inside the store just after midnight when he tried to steal a beer.
George Basaly, an employee, says Mohan hid it under his clothes and started walking out of the store. When the overnight clerk tried to stop him, Basaly says Mohan assaulted him.
Police say the employee was thrown into a display rack and left with a cut, bruises and swelling.
When Mohan exited the store, police say he was stopped by customers who held him until police came.
In court Friday, Mohan interrupted the proceedings several times while the charges against him were being read, saying “You got the details all wrong.”
When the judge issued an order for him to stay away from the clerk, Mohan said, "I'm not signing that, I'm not signing anything until I know what it is."
The clerk said, "You don't have to sign it, just know that you've been served with this order of protection."
7-Eleven employees say they're glad Mohan was arrested and are thankful their customers helped catch the suspect.
Mohan was charged with robbery and criminal mischief. His bail at $30,000 and his next court date is July 9.
