A Brentwood man is accused of running rental scams, and police say a homeless woman and a double amputee numbered among his victims.
Police say 59-year-old Aleandro Claudio is facing multiple charges, including scheming to defraud, grand larceny and issuing bad checks in connection to a string of rental scams.
News 12 visited a Brentwood home on Saturday that is listed as Claudio's address. A number of people showed up looking for money that they say Claudio owes them, saying they had tried to rent living spaces through ads on Craigslist that they thought were legitimate.
Police say Claudio's victims included two young females, a double amputee, a family with a newborn child and a homeless woman.
One woman tells News 12 that she was homeless and came to Claudio looking for a place to rent. She gave him money and says that Claudio told her the apartment would be available. But when she was ready to move in, she says Claudio was nowhere to be found. She tried to get her money back, but says Claudio gave her a partial payment.
"It didn't take him no time to collect the money, I don't understand why its taking him so long to return it," she says. "I have a child, I'm homeless. It's not fair."
Police say that when one victim requested a refund, Claudio wrote a check that bounced.
Police are asking any other potential victims to call them at 631-854-8332 as their investigation continues.
