Police say a 73-year-old man has died after being struck by a car in Woodmere.
The incident happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday on Peninsula Boulevard near the intersection of Edward Avenue.
Police say an SUV traveling southbound operated by a 36-year-old female struck the male. The victim, identified as Stuart Hecht, suffered severe injuries and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Residents tell News 12 there are accidents on this corner all of the time. Rachel Tuckman lives right across from the scene.
"We just heard the honking, and then the noise, and then the screaming afterwards," says Tuckman. "And that's when we looked out the window and saw someone was laying on the ground and we saw the driver obviously very distraught."
The victim's family did not want to speak to News 12 on camera, but they, along with neighbors, have been calling on the the town for years to add a stop sign or a light at the intersection.
"There's an accident here probably about once a week. It's crazy ... we've called the town," says Tuckman.
Parishioners say Hecht had just left services at the Julius Sand Synagogue on Edward Avenue. News 12 is told he was a cantor at the synagogue and lives just three houses away from where he was hit.
Police say there is no criminality involved, and the driver stayed at the scene.
