Suffolk police say they are investigating two incidents of anti-LGBTQ graffiti inside Connetquot High School.
The latest incident was reported on Feb. 17. Officials say anti-LGBTQ graffiti was written on a hallway wall.
Additionally, an anti-LGBTQ statement was written on a LGBTQ poster on a classroom door. That incident was reported to police on Feb. 15.
However, LGBTQ allies told News 12 they feared what this message sent to students.
The LGBT Network said further trainings need to happen at the school. They say they have offered assistance in providing that training, but the district has not accepted.
David Kilmnick, of the LGBT Network, says he was sent the photo of the poster by concerned members of the school community.
"This is a hate incident - it's trying to send a message to the LGBTQ kids and teachers in the school," Kilmnick says. "'Do not come out, you're not welcome here, this is not a safe space for you.'"
Connetquot Central School District issued a statement:
"Connetquot prides itself on being an inclusive environment. We strive to provide children with knowledge about their actions and the power of their words. Unfortunately, not every single person will resonate with our message. There is no room for hate in our halls and we urge parents to talk to their children about consequences and treating people with kindness. Connetquot will continue to have a zero tolerance policy on bullying, hate or any biased treatment toward any student or staff."
The district also said in their statement that mental health professionals will be available to staff and students when they return on Feb. 27.
The district and investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Suffolk County police.
