Police: 2 drunken drivers arrested after Rockville Centre crash
Police say two drivers are facing DWI charges after their vehicles collided early Saturday morning in Rockville Centre, and two passengers were seriously hurt in the crash.
The crash happened on Merrick Road shortly before 5 a.m. Police say 34-year-old Peter Serra, of Oceanside, was heading west in the eastbound lanes in his SUV near Windsor Avenue.
Serra crashed into a car driven by 38-year-old Melody Thompson, of Valley Stream, who was headed east with two passengers in her vehicle.
One of Thompson's passengers suffered multiple leg fractures and head trauma, and was hospitalized in critical condition. The second passenger suffered head trauma and a fractured arm, and was hospitalized in serious condition, police say.
Detectives say that both Serra and Thompson were taken into custody at the scene. Serra is being charged with vehicular assault, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. Thompson is being charged with driving while intoxicated as well.
One local lawmaker says the crash is the latest in the long list of signs that something needs to be done to address what he calls "the scourge of drunken driving" on Long Island. Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky, of Long Beach, says that while New York's DWI laws are some of the toughest in the nation, they should be even tougher. Kaminsky is proposing legislation that would make jail time for repeat DWI offenders mandatory.
