A Selden teen accused of driving drunk and leaving the scene of a crash was arraigned Monday in Central Islip, police say.
Suffolk County police say they arrested 17-year-old Christina Burns following two car crashes, including one that seriously injured a pedestrian.
News 12 Long Island is told that Burns slept at her aunt and uncle's house on 22 Ashford Drive in Bohemia after attending a party Saturday evening.
Police say she left the home at approximately 6:50 a.m. Sunday driving a 2005 Nissan Altima. They say that when she left the roadway, she struck a mailbox and drove across a lawn before striking 80-year-old Che Yeung, who was walking in the street.
Burns allegedly fled the scene in her vehicle.
Yeung, 80, of Bohemia, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where she is in critical condition with a head injury.
Approximately 30 minutes later, police say that Burns was involved in a second crash at the intersection of Route 347 and Route 25 in Nesconset.
News 12 is told that it was there that officers charged her with driving while intoxicated.
An investigation by 4th Precinct officers revealed that Burns' vehicle had more damage than sustained in the Nesconset crash.
Fifth Squad detectives were then notified, and linked Burns to the earlier incident. Burns was subsequently charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury.
Prosecutors say she failed a field sobriety test and that the teenager told police she drank five alcoholic seltzers at her cousin's graduation party.
"Christina is a good kid--she comes from a loving, supportive family and we have to remember here that she's presumed innocent," said James Pascarella, defense attorney for the suspect.
Bail for Burns was posted at $30,000.
Burns' uncle, 50-year-old Francis Rogalle, is charged with violating Suffolk County's social host law.
He is expected to arraigned at a later date.
