Plainview-Old Bethpage may nix kindergarten center
At a meeting Tuesday night, officials said they are considering closing the Plainview-Old Bethpage Kindergarten Center and moving the students to their local elementary school buildings.
Superintendent Dr. Lorna Lewis said the center was originally opened to help resolve an overcrowding issue.
"What you do for one set of solutions cannot be the same solution 20 years from now," said Lewis.
The school board also said money saved from closing the kindergarten center would help fund a ninth period of learning at the high school level.
"I don't feel that one group of students should be the be-all and the end-all for another group of students," said Nina Melzer, a kindergarten teacher. "It shouldn't be taken back off the backs of 5-year-old children."
Members of the school board will be voting on the measure Wednesday night at Mattlin Middle School at 7:30 p.m.
