Parents of slain Brentwood teens hope to raise awareness at SOTU
The parents of two Brentwood teens believed to have been murdered by MS-13 gang members will be sitting alongside the first lady during President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address tonight.
As News 12 has reported, Nisa Mickens, 15, and Kayla Cuevas, 16, were found beaten and stabbed to death in January 2016.
All four of their parents received presidential invitations to see Trump address the nation in person, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Monday.
Cuevas's mother Evelyn Rodriguez told News 12 Tuesday that she was "trying to make a difference" in her community by raising awareness about the fight against MS-13.
The parents hope to speak directly to President Trump. It’s expected he will point them out during his speech while mentioning his strategies to dismantle the gang.
Walter Barrientos, of Make the Road New York, says the president is using the victims' families to further his immigration agenda.

“The president is trying to use gang violence as an excuse to explain, or justify his over-arching and overreach on immigration enforcement,” he says.

Both Rodriguez and Mickens say their focus remains on their daughters.
News 12 will have live coverage of the State of the Union at 9 p.m.
