Parents in Bohemia concerned over speeding on road near bus stop
Parents in Bohemia say speeding drivers are jeopardizing the safety of their children.
Concerned parents and grandparents of Sycamore Avenue Elementary School students say their corner bus stop looks more like a racetrack in the morning and afternoon.
The bus stop is located at the corner of Oakdale-Bohemia Road and Viking Court, which is just north of Sunrise Highway. Drivers often use it as a shortcut to Veterans Highway, and parents say drivers often ignore the children's safety.
The posted speed limit is 30 mph, but parents say many cars go by much faster during school hours.
News 12 Long Island has reached out to the Town of Islip's Department of Public Works. It emailed a statement, saying "A traffic study will be conducted as the health, safety and welfare of our children is of the utmost importance."
While parents say they've been calling for months, Islip DPW says it only became aware of the problem Wednesday.
Suffolk police also say their 5th Precinct COPE officers are conducting a safety review of the street, and will have results in November.
