Parents gathered in Melville Tuesday to defend the use of electrical shock treatment on certain troubled children. The gathering comes after 17-year-old Antwone Nicholson?s foster mother announced that she is suing the Freeport School District for sending her child to a facility that uses electrical shock treatment. Ken Mollins, the family?s lawyer, alleges electrical shock therapy is a form of corporal punishment, which is illegal in New York State. He also says the district should not have sent Nicholson to an out-of-state school. Parents who support shock therapy say the lawsuit is a personal attack against them and say the treatment saved their child?s life. School officials responded to the suit by saying the district works closely with parents to find options that best suit the child?s needs.
