Parent: Late school bus affecting children’s education
A Baldwin mother says chronic bus lateness is affecting her son's education.
Peggy Barksdale's fourth-grade son Matthew attends the Holy Child Academy, a private school in Old Westbury. State law requires the Baldwin School District to provide bus transportation, but Barksdale says her son often arrives late to school -- sometimes by an hour or two.
Barksdale showed News 12 a list that she says she received from Holy Child Academy, recounting the dates and times last year that her son and other students on the bus were late to school. She says she's complained to the district and the Acme Bus company without any luck.
The mother says her son was late at least 25 times last year, and five times so far this year. On one of those days, Matthew was so late that he had to rush through a test.
"As he was walking in, the kids were already taking the math test," Barksdale says.
Her straight-A student son got a 67 on that test, and Barksdale blames the bus company and the district.
The bus company did not comment to News 12, but Baldwin school officials said in a statement, "The district is investigating the concerns that have been brought forward as relates to this one specific private school/bus route."
The school district added that the majority of students who go to different private schools have been dropped off on time.
