SantaCon won't be coming to town this year -- at least not in Long Beach or Rockville Centre, according to its organizer.
Unique Bar Crawl posted on its Facebook page to say the event scheduled for this Saturday had been scrapped due to public opposition.
The bar crawl involves people dressing up as Santa Claus or his elves. The event originated in New York City, where there have been problems in recent years with some people bar-hopping in red suits, getting drunk, passing out in public or getting arrested.
SantaCon's rowdy reputation is one of the reasons why Long Beach officials nixed the idea.
"The fact that they got out of control and were very dangerous caused us concern," says acting City Manager Michael Tangney. "We also were not notified in a timely fashion by the organizers."
Unique Bar Crawl issued a statement to News 12 saying: "It's a shame that the connotation of Santa Con comes from the NYC and Hoboken events. We operate and run our events in a very respectful manner."
Melissa Doktofsky, of Toys of Hope, was surprised to hear of the event's cancellation. A portion of the proceeds from SantaCon were supposed to benefit her charity for children.
"That puts us in dire need of donations to make up for that loss," she says.
The organizer still encourages people to donate to the charity.
