Officials: Melissa's Restaurant too violent for Huntington Station
State, county and town officials called on the New York State Liquor Authority to revoke the license of a Huntington Station bar with a history of violence.
Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said during a news conference Thursday that police have responded to almost 130 incidents at Melissa's Restaurant over the years. It's located at the intersection of Pulaski Road and New York Avenue.
"The police reports speak for themselves," said Cuthbertson. "If they want to run an establishment where that type of violence doesn't happen, we'll be delighted. But until that happens, we're going to keep up this fight."
About two weeks ago, police say there was a shooting right outside the bar. There were no injuries reported. Investigators say back in March, a man sitting in the parking lot was shot and injured.
Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer said safety in the area is a top priority.
"We want to send a very clear message that Huntington is a place for your families," he said. "It's a place for businesses. It's a place where you can have a great quality of life, and we won't tolerate this."
The owners and attorneys for the bar are set to have a hearing before the state Liquor Authority Friday. They have claimed the bar is safe and that it's been made a scapegoat for escalating community violence.
