Lakewood school officials say that school buses spotted in Toms River last week were dropping off meals and not children.
Toms River police had originally pulled over a Lakewood school bus in town that was suspected of having been dropping off children. All schools in New Jersey are currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But Lakewood officials say that the buses were delivering free lunches and reduced lunches to students who need the food. The children spotted on the school bus belonged to the bus driver, according to officials
The Lakewood School District states that no schools are currently open in Lakewood and that they are adhering to Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order.
Lakewood residents have been facing some criticism over the past few weeks due to several publicized instances of police having to break up large gatherings despite the governor’s order banning social gatherings. But Murphy says that the residents have by-and-large been following his order.
The Lakewood Board of Education voted Tuesday night to request an investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office into the false accusations regarding the school buses.
It is important to note that other communities around the state have been dealing with similar noncompliance issues. Newark police wrote 161 summonses and closed 15 businesses Monday night for violating the city’s social distancing guidelines.
