A Suffolk County correction officer is accused of sexually abusing a boy over several years.
Robert Weis, 55, remained silent as he was walked out of Southampton Town police headquarters Friday morning.
Prosecutors say Weis sexually abused a friend's child from age 7 to 16. Investigators say the abuse started in 1996, but the alleged victim came forward in March.
Police say Weis had a 12-year-old boy with him in his car when he was arrested Thursday.
Prosecutors say other boys have come forward, saying they were abused during sleepovers at Weis' Hampton Bays home. That's currently being investigated. Prosecutors say Weis has been a foster father for 15 years and legally adopted five boys who are now over age 19.
"He's had contact with a number of different children throughout his life in a role where these children were supposed to trust him," says Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini.
Weis, who is an Army veteran, also faces child sex abuse charges in South Carolina from 2016.
"The fact that he had access to so many vulnerable people who were staying overnight at his house frequently, certainly gives rise to the concern that this victim here in New York may not be the only victim," says Southampton Town Police Chief Steven Skrynecki.
Officials say they searched Weis' home and recovered electronics and DVDs. They say some were videos of his basement with underage boys performing sex acts. The DA says one of the videos was titled "Age Is Just a Number."
Police say they also recovered three illegal handguns, 32 long rifles and more than 50,000 rounds of ammunition.
Two young men showed up at Weis' house upset at the presence of News 12's cameras and said, "You guys need to leave." One neighbor said they weren't surprised to hear of the charges against Weis.
Weis pleaded not guilty in court and was held on $1 million cash bail.
The Suffolk sheriff's office says Weis was put on 30-day probation without pay and that it is seeking his termination.
Southampton Town police ask any other potential victims to come forward and call them at 631-702-2230.
