Two people were killed in a small plane crash Saturday morning in Mattituck.
It happened at a field owned by Harbes Farm. The FAA says a Beechcraft A36 aircraft with two people aboard crashed around 9:15 a.m.
Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell confirms that two people died in the crash. Their identities have not been released at this time.
Southold police say there was a man and woman on board the plane. There was also a dog on board, which survived the wreck.
According to Russell, the cause of the crash was mechanical in nature. He says the pilot attempted to land in the farm field.
In a statement, Harbes Farm says the plane crashed and caught fire in its field after it was seen flying low over the property. The farm says, "Firefighters, police officers and rescue personnel arrived at the scene within minutes and put out the ensuing fire. This is a sad tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the passengers of the aircraft."
According to the commissioner of MacArthur Airport, the plane had departed from MacArthur's Runway 6 around 9 a.m.
The plane was heading to New Bedford, Massachusetts, Supervisor Russell says.
The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident.
