The NYPD in Brooklyn is preparing to hand out thousands of Christmas gifts to children as part of an annual holiday charity event.
Officers at Borough Brooklyn North plan on dressing up as super heroes, Disney characters and other children's icons while handing out thousands of gifts ad part of their Holiday Sleigh Ride.
It's a tradition that started last year, Chief Jeffrey Maddrey says.
"A lot of people saw it on TV and social media, and they were really excited about it. We're getting phone calls, emails, text messages. People
are waiting for us, they're ready. They want to see what Brooklyn North is going to do this year and we're ready to do it bigger than ever," he says.
For the past few weeks, the officers have been collecting and sorting toys. Much like Santa’s workshop, officers have been busy organizing and wrapping gifts.
The sleigh will make its way from the 94th Precinct through all 10 precincts in Brooklyn North.
"We want to build with our community. We want to connect with our communities and we want to give back to our communities. We're very much a part of this community and we just want to give back and this is our way to give back,"  Maddrey says.
Last year 3,000 kids received gifts through the event. This year, 7,000 kids are expected to receive Christmas gifts.
Officers will be ready to deliver the gifts on Santa's sleigh on Dec. 21.
