An NYPD officer from Nassau County has been charged with allegedly acting as an illegal agent of the People's Republic of China.
A U.S. District Court complaint alleges Baimadajie Angwang knowingly acted as an agent without prior notification to the U.S. attorney general, as is required by law, according to the complaint.
Angwang is a a 33-year-old Tibetan native of the People's Republic of China and a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in Williston Park. He worked in the 111th Precinct in Queens, where he won a 'Cop on the Month' award in 2018, and is also a member of the United States Army Reserve with "secret" security clearance, according to the complaint.
The complaint says Angwang contacted consulate officials more than 100 times since 2014. It also says Angwang acted "at the direction and control" of Chinese government officials at the consulate in New York to report on the activities of fellow ethnic Tibetans and used his official position at the police department to give consulate officials access to senior NYPD officials.
Investigators say in one phone call to a consulate official, Angwang offered "to raise our country's soft power" by having the official attend NYPD events. He also allegedly offered to provide them with nonpublic information about the inner workings of the NYPD.
The complaint accuses Angwang of wire fraud by intentionally devising a scheme to defraud the U.S. Department of Defense. He is also accused of providing false statements and obstruction of an official proceeding.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea issued a statement saying, "As alleged in this federal complaint, Baimadajie Angwang violated every oath he took in this country. One to the United States, another to the U.S. Army, and a third to this Police Department."
