NYC to lift ban on cellphones in public schools
The ban on cellphones in public schools will soon be a thing of the past.
Though the details are still being worked out, the cellphone ban will be lifted on March 2. Each individual school will foster their own rules and regulations on kids using their phones, but they will no longer be allowed to ban them.
The cornerstone reason for lifting the ban is child safety. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina both stressed that this decision will ease parents' safety concerns, as they will now be able to better communicate with their kids.
De Blasio has criticized the former policy of banning cellphones, saying that it didn't make any sense in the first place.
Chancellor Farina plans to meet with all New York City superintendents next Tuesday to structure disciplinary policies for students who misuse their phones.
