NYC officials expect more swine flu cases
There are at least 51 cases of swine flu in New York state and health officials say the number is expected to rise.
A 2-year-old child suspected of having swine flu was hospitalized in the Bronx. A woman who had contact with someone who traveled to Mexico was treated and released from a hospital in Brooklyn.
There are at least 93 cases of swine flu confirmed in the United States, including dozens of students at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that a 23-month-old child in Texas died from the disease.Swine flu is suspected in up to 159 deaths in Mexico. Officials discourage nonessential travel to Mexico, and arriving travelers are being questioned at the Mexican border.
St. Brigid's School in Bushwick, Good Shepherd School in Marine Park and Bishop Kearney High School in Mapleton closed voluntarily until Monday so they can be disinfected. New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden says the schools were not advised to close, but chose to do so after students from each school came down with flu-like symptoms. The sick student who attends St. Brigid has a sibling who goes to St. Francis, in Queens.
The Archdioceses of both the Bronx and Brooklyn say they are monitoring the potential for swine flu in all of their schools.
Residents in Mexican neighborhoods of the Bronx say they are trying to maintain communication with their relatives in Mexico. The community plans to hold a prayer session Wednesday evening for their Mexican family members.
Symptoms of swine flu include a fever of more than 100 degrees, coughing, joint aches, severe headache, vomiting and diarrhea.
AP wire services contributed to this report.
