Family, friends and first responders were in North Merrick on Saturday morning for a street renaming ceremony that honored a late firefighter.

The Town of Hempstead dedicated a street to Joseph Vicario, the ex-captain of the North Merrick Fire Department, who died from a 9/11-related illness back in 2020.

Vicario was a volunteer firefighter for over 25 years and assisted with the World Trade Center recovery efforts.

Vicario and his family lived on the street formerly known as Sycamore Avenue.
