Still no vote was reached in the Rockland County Legislature's hearing on proposed local laws to create a department for building and code enforcement.
There's less than one month until the state's order for Rockland County's takeover of Spring Valley's building inspections and fire code enforcement will go into effect.
The County Legislature held a public hearing last night, but they put off a vote to vote on the local law necessary to enable the takeover until Feb. 1.
The call to take over building and fire inspections intensified after last march’s fatal fire at an assisted living facility. The fire claimed the lives of volunteer firefighter Jared Lloyd and resident Oliver Hueston.
However, Chairman Jay Hood Jr. says he says needs to review the constitutionality of the change.
"Even if we vote two weeks from now, Ed Day has promised to be ready to go. So, not losing any time whatsoever ever,” he says.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day says expects the county to take over the duties of the Spring Valley Building Department on Feb. 14.
However, pressure for change from the public and other lawmakers is boiling.
"There are too many in this county that are more worried about next election rather than the next situation this can happen. It’s disgusting and disheartening,” says Laurie Santulli, of the Rockland County Legislature.
The law goes into effect on Feb. 14. The Legislature is encouraging more comments to their clerk's office. The public hearing is staying open until Feb. 1.
