A Newsday report says Long Island school tax hikes being proposed for next year are at a 40-year low.
According to Newsday, the average proposed increase for Long Island school districts next year is 1.83 percent. That is down from the 3.27 percent average increase that districts approved for this current school year.
Some school administrators say local school districts are feeling the crunch of a tax cap system that limits how much funding a district can ask for from its residents.
Hundreds of teachers and parents protested in Garden City Park today against the state Senate's budget, calling for more funding from the state for local public schools.
