SMITHTOWN - State Sen. Lee Zeldin defeated Stony Brook attorney George Demos for the Republican nomination in the 1st Congressional District primary election Tuesday night.

He will take on Rep. Tim Bishop (D – Southampton) in November.

Zeldin is a major in the Army Reserve who served in Iraq. He had the endorsement of the Suffolk Republican Party, as well as the New York State Republican Party, entering Tuesday’s primary.

Zeldin is currently serving his second term in the state Senate.

Gregory Meeks won the Democratic primary in the 5th Congressional District. Democrat Kathleen Rice and Republican Bruce Blakeman declared victory in the 4th Congressional District primaries.
