YAPHANK - Neighbors in Yaphank say they're fed up with the sound of gunfire from a shooting range on county-owned land.

Neighbors claim the noise coming from Hunter Sports is hurting their quality of life and violating a Brookhaven town noise ordinance.

Last month, a judge convicted the range owner on one of many noise violations, but said the range can remain open until further notice. Residents say Hunter Sports was aware of Brookhaven's noise ordinance before it reopened the shooting range, and they claim the owners knew the town would make no exemptions to it.

But the attorney for Hunter Sports says they were told the noise ordinance doesn't apply to Suffolk County land.

Brookhaven Councilwoman Connie Kepert says the county should put a stop to the arguments and close the shooting range.
