Wyandanch man accused of DWI in wrong-way cruiser crash

WYANDANCH - Police say a Wyandanch man is accused of being drunk behind the wheel, driving the wrong way down a Suffolk road and then crashing into a police cruiser, seriously injuring an officer. Investigators say the incident occurred at around 10 p.m. last night. Rony Santos, 42, was driving on Long Island Avenue when he crossed over into the other lane. He slammed head-on into a police car that was on patrol, officials say. Two officers were inside the vehicle. One of them was air-lifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center with a laceration to his head and injuries to his back and shoulders. The other officer was treated at the hospital and released. Santos was arraigned this afternoon and is being held on $50,000 cash bail. He is due back in court on July 19.
