LAKE RONKONKOMA - A woman who lost her father to a 2006 distracted driving accident is hoping that others will learn a serious lesson from her tragedy. Karen Torres' father, Patrick Mapleson, was on the job as a state highway worker when he was killed. He was working along Sunrise Highway in Eastport when a cement truck barreled into him. Torres says the truck driver had leaned over to pick up a water bottle when he lost control.Now, Torres volunteers to speak with young drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. Today, she told her father's story to teens at Sachem High School.
