CENTRAL ISLIP - Officials say a young woman was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Central Islip.

Police say Dominique Crifasi was crossing Suffolk Avenue near Lowell Avenue when she was struck around 8:30 p.m. Friday. The driver left the scene.

Crifasi, age 23, was taken to Southside Hospital for treatment of several serious injuries, including a broken femur. She is expected to be OK.

Crifasi is a single mother of a 4-year-old child.

The vehicle was last seen heading east on Suffolk Avenue, but a description of the car was not available.

Heather Williams, Dominique's mother, spoke with News 12 about the incident.

"They just hit her and keep going. I don't understand that…Like where is the love? Where is the compassion?" she asked.

She made a plea for the public's help in finding the hit-and-run driver.

"If anybody has any information, if you saw the car that hit my daughter, you caught half of the license plate, you heard somebody talking about they hit somebody, please call Suffolk County police, please."

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Neighbors in the area say because of the proximity to a middle school and train station, more needs to be done at the intersection to protect pedestrians.
