EAST ISLIP - A driver was killed Friday when police say she veered off an East Islip road and crashed into a building.
Suffolk police say the 23-year-old woman suddenly swerved her Honda in front of a landscaper's truck, went up onto the grass and crashed into the AmVets building on Carleton Avenue near Wall Street around 8:40 a.m.
The driver, identified as Kerri Becvar, of East Islip, was pronounced dead on arrival at Southside Hospital. Police say she was the only person in the car, and no one was else injured in the crash.
A lack of skid marks on the street lead police to wonder if Becvar may have suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel, although the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
Raymond Morturano says his AmVets post feeds and assists returning war veterans. He adds that he's unsure of how the post will rebuild after the crash. Insurance, he says, will not cover all the costs.
AmVets members say about three years ago, a motorist was heading northbound on the same street, swerved in a similar fashion and hit their sign, knocking it from its base.
