STONY BROOK - A woman accused of stealing purses by preying on supermarket shoppers in the produce aisle was arraigned today. Police say Jennifer O'Leary, of Stony Brook, stole seven handbags at six different supermarkets. O'Leary was arrested yesterday after a 77-year-old woman's handbag was snatched from a shopping cart at Uncle Giuseppe's on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station. Police say O'Leary targeted shoppers looking at fruits and vegetables at supermarkets in Stony Brook, Setauket, Centereach and Port Jefferson Station. Prosecutors say O?Leary would steal the pocketbooks, take the credit cards out of it and make purchases with the cards. O?Leary faces seven counts of grand larceny and two counts of forgery. A judge gave O?Leary a $10,000 cash bail.
