Winery tour bus driver accused of DWI

A bus driver from Mount Sinai has been charged with being drunk behind the wheel while driving 25 people on a tour of North Fork

MOUNT SINAI - A bus driver from Mount Sinai has been charged with being drunk behind the wheel while driving 25 people on a tour of North Fork vineyards.

According to authorities, 48-year-old Christopher Dopkins had a blood-alcohol level of .21, more than twice the legal limit, when police caught up with him on Sound Avenue Saturday evening.

When police spotted Dopkins, they say he already pulled to the side of the road. They say they got a call moments earlier from Dopkins' supervisor at Red Carpet Limousine.

"The owner was concerned after speaking with the driver that something had occurred and that maybe he was under the influence, so he told him to stop the bus, and at that point we got a phone call," says Lt. Richard Boden, of Riverhead Town Police.

Police say Dopkins admitted to drinking while driving at the scene.

Dopkins was released today on $10,000 bail.
