WEST ISLIP - News 12 Long Island has learned that students in the West Islip School District have been caught using Facebook to cheat on an exam.

The superintendent of the district, Richard Simon, confirms to News 12 that 12 students created a Facebook group page to help each other with homework and lab studies. However, the superintendent claims that page was also used to cheat on an exam. It is not clear what kind of exam it was.

The students caught cheating were taking part in a ninth-grade biology class.

The superintendent says the students were given anything from a warning to an out-of-school suspension. School officials say each one of these students are good kids who don't have any past disciplinary issues.

The Facebook page has since been taken down.

News 12 Long Island has learned that the district was notified of the cheating through an anonymous letter.
