MINEOLA - A warrant has been issued for a man who pleaded guilty in a dog abuse case but failed to appear at his sentencing Monday.

As News 12 has reported, Lee Hughes and two other people pleaded guilty in March in connection with the mutilation of a dog named Miss Harper.

Hughes and his estranged wife admitted to cutting off the dog's ear and part of her leg. The Nassau SPCA says the pit bull was just a few months old when the abuse happened in 2013, and her wounds became infected. News 12 was there when the dog was adopted by a Bellmore family following her recovery.

Hughes faced up to six months behind bars, but News 12 is told he did not show up for his sentencing today.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.
