EAST SETAUKET - A science teacher at Ward Melville High School is accused of sexually abusing a student.

Officials arrested Stephen Malusa, 47, after they say an investigation revealed that he had abused a 15-year-old female student in May 2013.

Three Village Central School District has commented saying, "The district is disturbed by these allegations. The teacher will not be providing any instructional services in the district, effective immediately, pending the outcome of the legal process. The teacher was permanently cleared through the State's fingerprint background check, and, to the best of the district's knowledge, has no criminal record."

According to court papers, the alleged incident took place in the parking lot of a shopping center on Route 25A in Rocky Point at around 3:30 p.m. Those papers indicate that Malusa intentionally groped the underage teen. Police did not say when she came forward with the accusation.

Malusa, of Selden, has been teaching at the high school since 2002 and has been coaching the school’s award-winning Science Olympiad team since 2006.

Malusa is charged with sexual abuse in the third degree and endangering the welfare of a child. He is being held on $45,000 bond and is expected back in court on Monday.

Police are asking anyone who feels they may be a victim to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
