SMITHTOWN - The death of a war hero from Long Island is being mourned by family and friends.

Police say Seamus Byrne was hit by a car as he crossed Main Street in Smithtown early yesterday morning. Byrne was walking home after celebrating his 33rd birthday with his wife and friends, according to Newsday.

Byrne was a decorated veteran who had been awarded the Purple Heart after being injured by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.

The driver who hit Byrne has not been charged.
