MASSAPEQUA PARK - Students from Wantagh High School got a close-up look at what it takes to be a Nassau police officer today as the police department held its sixth annual Youth Academy.

The students learned about the physical training, defensive tactics and crisis awareness that are all part of police work. They also got to see K-9 and aviation units in action.

The department's Youth Academy started in 2007 and first targeted parts of the county with higher crime rates. The idea was to get at-risk youths to become more familiar with police work.

Now, thanks to a donation from the Nassau County Police Department Foundation, students throughout the county can take part in the workshop.
