ST. JAMES - Police arrested a Smithtown man last night for allegedly stealing gasoline from 11 different gas stations across Suffolk County.

During the past four months, authorities say 21-year-old Walter Amerbach would pull up to gas station pumps in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, ask the attendant to fill the tank and then drive off without paying.

Lt. Frank Carparelli says the suspect stole gas 16 times, most recently at the Wave station in St. James.
