Wake held for mother and young son killed in Hempstead fire

HEMPSTEAD - Wake services were held today for a single mother and her child who were killed in an apartment fire in Hempstead last weekend.

Guadalupe Ramirez, 38, and her 8-year-old son, Fernando, died in their apartment on St. Paul's Road North during the fire.

Funerals for the two will be held on Tuesday. A fund has been established to help the family cover the costs.

Many other residents who lived in the building lost all of their belongings to the smoke and flames. The Red Cross is working to find housing for the families whose apartments were completely destroyed.

Other tenants say there was a sign in the hallway saying the fire alarms weren't working and to call 911 in the event of an emergency.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
