MATTITUCK - Family, friends and colleagues are gathering for a second day in Mattituck to pay their respects to a veteran Suffolk County detective who was killed in a car accident over the weekend.

Detective Sgt. Robert Reecks, 57, died early Saturday morning when his car struck a bridge abutment off Sunrise Highway in Moriches.

Fellow officers say the former head of Suffolk's Hate Crimes Unit will be missed.

?Bob Reecks was a consummate Suffolk County professional from his days in Highway Patrol, where I first met him,? says Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky, of the Suffolk County Police Department.

A wake for Reecks is being held this afternoon and will continue this evening. His funeral will be held tomorrow morning in Lake Ronkonkoma.
