WADING RIVER - A Wading River man is making a name for himself as one of the best drone-racing pilots in the uncharted sport.
Steve "Zoomas" Zoumas is a pilot of the new Drone Racing League and the defending champion of the league's first-ever "Miami Lights" race, which was held earlier this year at the NFL's Sun Life Stadium.
"This is the sport of the future," says Zoumas. "So sit tight and keep watching."
He has competed in events from Kentucky to Dubai, and he practices at the FPV Addiction drone-racing field in Coram.
Zoumas, who also builds drones, and his competitors don goggles that place them in the "cockpit" of their drones. They then race the remote-controlled aircraft upward of 80 mph through indoor and outdoor courses.
He's currently training for the U.S. National Drone Racing Championship being held on Governors Island this August.
