HEMPSTEAD - Hundreds of volunteers turned out to build a playground in Hempstead's Mirschel Park today.

Nonprofit KaBOOM! led the effort to construct the playground. Its design was taken from drawings submitted by children.

The park is just steps from Terrace Avenue, a block known for its gun violence. A teenager was fatally shot just six blocks from Terrace Avenue Wednesday night.

Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall says he will keep a close eye on the park.
