LONG BEACH - A group of high school students came together to host a volleyball tournament fundraiser for the child of one of their teachers.

Ethan Demmers, 5, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy last year, a progressive and degenerative disease that makes his muscles weak. He goes to physical therapy twice each week and takes karate and swimming lessons to stay strong.

In an effort to raise funds and awareness, some of Dustin Demmer’s Floral Park Memorial High School students organized the volleyball tournament at the Long Beach boardwalk courts Sunday afternoon.

Dustin and his wife, Betsy, said they were moved by the gesture.

“It's a little overwhelming and we are so appreciative,” said Betsy Demmers.
