SETAUKET - A vigil was held in Setauket Tuesday night in memory of a Stony Brook woman killed by an alleged drunken driver.

Police say Krystal Berkowitz, 21, got out of her friend Lawrence Pagano's SUV because she thought he was too drunk to drive. Pagano allegedly followed her down the road to try and talk to her, but instead struck her with the vehicle. Berkowitz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pagano, of Coram, was arraigned Tuesday on a DWI charge in Central Islip.

Friends at the vigil say Berkowitz was estranged from her family and had lived in several group homes. She was remembered at the vigil for being a giving and kind person who was always there for her friends.
